Rum

Arguably the best rum in the world is produced with the demineralised waters and the molasses of the sugar cane of certain regions of this country. Although there are several rum factories, the one in Santiago de Cuba (former Bacardi Factory and the one in Havana City (producing Havana Club) are the most outstanding factories.

There is commonly 3, 5,and 7 years vintage rums produced in the island although Grand Reserve of 15 and 25 years can be found in some shops mainly in factories. The brands Cubans prefer are: Havana Club, Paticruzado (Los Marinos), Matusalem, Caney, Santiago, and the recent produced Mulata and Caribbean Club.

Aguadiente; this is distilled cane juice. Extremely strong is also produced in some factories. Famous are Santero , Sao Can and Legendario.

There is rum distillery in Pinar del Rio that produces a famous rum branded Guayabita del Pinar, it is produced from the alcohols obtained from a small guava fruit, that is only harvested in the Pinar del Rio mountais. All the bottles have one of this guavas inside. There are two versions of Guayabita del Pinar, one is dry, just like rum and the other is sweet, like a liquor.

Cuba is famous for the variety of exotic cocktails that visitors can sip, some of them are:

Wine can also be purchased at shops, bars and restaurants but there is not a wine production tradition in Cuba although, it is produced, so most of the good wines found in the island is imported from Spain and France.

Mojito: A refreshing drink flavoured with mint , ice, lemon juice, sugar, soda water, rum and angostura bitter drops.

Daiquiri: Favoured by Hemingway, always served in a wide glass, lemon, frappe ice, triple sec, rum and sugar.

Cuba Libre: Rum, Cola and lemon

Pina Colada: Pineapple juice, coconut, milk, rum and ice, all  blended.

Ron Collins: Lemon, ice sugar, rum, and angostura biter drops all in a tall glass.

Cubanito: Rum, tomato juice, lemon juice, salt and some Tabasco sauce.
